📰 This week’s stories

  •  🚨 Breaking: MOHELA tried to block forgiveness for millions
About an hour ago, this press release dropped revealing that MOHELA played a central role in blocking the Biden’s first forgiveness plan, and that the servicer has been deliberately deflecting calls from customers. What does this mean for MOHELA customers? I’m not sure yet. But I’ll share more as this story develops.

  • 🙏 Miguel Cardona responds to forgiveness critics
Yesterday our Education Secretary appeared on Good Morning America to talk SAVE, forgiveness, and Biden.

When asked to respond to forgiveness critics, Cardona reminded us they’re not just “cancelling debt”—they’re fixing a broken system and building one that makes college affordable and accessible.

To add to that: When people are burdened by loans, they can’t really participate in anything that fuels the economy—investing money, starting a business, buying a home. They’re stuck. Freeing them from debt (that’s often mostly interest, anyway) can benefit the person and the economy at once.

  • 🩺 Medical students in the Bronx receive free tuition
This is a really cool story. The best part is that this $1 billion dollar gift is projected to fund tuition forever. This could actually let doctors make career choices based off what’s best for the country, not what will help them pay off their loans. And with any luck, this could lead to a higher standard of healthcare.

  • 🚪Are you one step away from federal forgiveness?
If you missed last week’s video, here’s what you need to do to benefit from the one-time account adjustment and get your 20-year-old loans forgiven:

    1. Make sure your loans are owned by the Education Department. See how

    2. If they are owned by the ED, and you’ve had them for 20+ years, hang tight. You’re on track for forgiveness.

    3. If you have commercially held FFELP Loans, Perkins Loans, or HEAL loans, you should consolidate.
